About Me
Randy Bassett
I live in Hamilton, Ontario, where I have for most of my life. I have had too many jobs to track as well as a few different career paths, but for the past 14 years I have been self-employed. My company does computer software and website design and development. My son says I am a geek – I’ve been called worse!
Of all the jobs and titles I have had, two are my favourites. I am lucky to be a husband to Sue, the woman who means the world to me. I am also the father of 2 teenagers, sources of endless insanity ... and love!
Outside of work and family, I am proud to be a co-founder and co-chair of a local charity called Opening Hearts. This charity focuses on supporting children with special needs and their families. My wife and I have a daughter with special needs and Opening Hearts was born out of a need to give back to the community who helped us out. It was also born from a need to give meaning to our challenges and help others in similar circumstances.
It is the same driver behind the start of this blog.
About the Blog
View From the Edge
For so long I have been troubled by the choices that haunt so many youth and adults, especially around drugs and suicide. I'll be opening up my past to show that I have been there and there are ways out. My hope for this blog will be to:
- Show teens and youth that there is hope, there is a light
- Help parents understand these challenges facing teens - from both sides
- Help teens and adults break from the chains that hold them back, to move forward with more freedom and peace.
I am not a psychologist, therapist or anything like that. I will not have any special treatments, ointments or magic pills. I am quite simply one who has been where some of you might be now and by sharing my journey, I hope I can help.
This blog has been on the drawing board for a while now, but it has been a lifetime in the making.
